We may think it’s ideal to wake up, flip the lights on, and go straight to our phones, but it’s at odds with how humans function. We awaken gradually. Forgetting this puts you in a stressful brainwave state you do not want to be in. Historically, humans didn’t dive into action upon waking unless they were being attacked. As Pilar explains: “We live in a culture that has trained us—aggressively—to believe that how we should operate is that we should get up in the morning, go go go go go, straight-line productivity, and then be able to drop off to sleep at night. And then wake up, and do it all over again.” The trouble with this? “That is inherently not how human body-mind systems work.” We operate in “ultradian rhythms.” These are like circadian rhythms but shrunk down from 24 hours to 90–120 minutes. Aligning your tasks with these rhythms, rather than powering through in a straight line, is crucial to both getting things done and feeling good while doing so.
