By the late 1980s, South Africa had manufactured 153 Olifant Mk1A tanks, with two tank Squadrons, E and F, actively deployed during the South African Border War. These units participated in key operations such as Moduler, Hooper, and Packer (1987-1988), where the South African Defence Force (SADF) intervened to support their allies, UNITA (The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola), against Cuban and Soviet-backed FAPLA (People's Armed Forces of Liberation of Angola) forces. Anticipating the need for a more formidable upgrade to the Olifant Mk1A, and amidst the formulation of requirements for a new generation Main Battle Tank, the South African arms industry embarked on the development of the Olifant Mk1B. Unveiled to the public in 1991, the Olifant Mk1B represented a comprehensive overhaul of its predecessor, tailored specifically for African landscapes and shaped by lessons learned from the South African Border War.
