The Metamorphosis of the UConn Extension Master Gardener Program Sarah Bailey, State Extension Master Gardener Coordinator Initially developed to train volunteers to assist Extension agents with urban consumer horticulture inquiries, the UConn Extension Master Gardener program has grown into a network of trained “citizen horticulturists” who assist, encourage and teach all aspects of horticultural and related environmental issues to Connecticut residents. Master Gardeners work with institutional partners such as municipalities, museums, schools and environmental groups; with community groups such as community gardens and garden clubs as well as individuals who have questions or concerns about their own gardens and the environment they live in. The program is currently undergoing a significant transformation as it moves from a traditional in-class, lecture-based program to a hybrid class involving both on-line and hands-on learning. Additionally, the program is implementing different ways to reach and diversify its clientele.
