It is no mystery why the Makerbot Gen 5 had problems, the Smart Extruder. The Makekbot Smart Extruder had many things going for it. Self leveling bed feature, filament detection wheel for jams and end of spool, and magnetic quick swap feature to switch the extruder easy are a few great features. The only main problem with this extruder is it was prone to jamming. Sometimes it was possible to heat the nozzle up and pull the filament out but it was more common for the filament to break in your hand. Filament could also become trapped inside the unit making it impossible to load filament. It became very common for every other print to fail. Under warranty, the customer were unable to open the extruder, this would void warranty. The only solution was to call MakerBot customer care to have a new extruder. The MakerBot customer support team would send videos, documents and walk the customer through many steps to try and resolve the issue. When the Smart Extruder was jammed, it is jammed. A new extruder would be shipped and take about a week to arrive. MakerBot did thousands of hours of testing and designed the much improved Smart Extruder +.
