Sony Cinematic 4K Astro Timelapse - Sony a7siii - Fisherman's Island Aurora

The summer of 2022 brought an ultimate first for me - photographing the Northern Lights. Even though the footage and compositions weren't as vibrant as I'd been hoping for, I was still hooked by what the camera captured. With a plan in motion to head back to Northern Michigan I was paying a lot of attention to the different space weather sites to see if there would be another opportunity to view and photograph this phenomenon. I was getting a bit disappointed as reports weren't being optimistic and smokes for wild fires were making night sky viewing conditions dismal. On my last night in Northern Michigan notifications started to pop up on my phone pointing to a good opportunity. After returning from a final sunset photographing the local sunflower fields I settled on a trip to the Lake Michigan shoreline just south of Charlevoix. I hadn't been to this site since I moved away from Michigan but was pretty confident it would offer a the unobstructed views I was hoping for. Once out on the beach the northerly wind made for a bit of a difficult set up - I was hoping to place the cameras on the shoreline but ended a few feet back in order to avoid any potential water spraying up on the lenses. As soon as I had the cameras set up, sky framed and shutter churning away a notification popped up on my phone and immediately the pillars of light erupted across the northern horizon. The only drawback to the night would be the rising moon which would begin to wash out the aurora as the night carried on. But, the four hours of shooting were hugely rewarding. I hope you agree. All footage captured on the Sony a7siii & Sony a7iv, using the Sony FE24-70GM, FE14GM, FE24GM, and FE35GM lenses ISO 6400 | F/1.8 | 5 sec. ~ 720 images, 480 images and 240 images.
