Land Rover is exploring a street-legal version of its D7X-R Dakar rally vehicle, based on the Defender OCTA and standard Defender 110 chassis. The D7X-R uses stock chassis, subframes, and engine per Dakar T2 class rules, with upgraded internals, front and rear mechanical limited-slip differentials, and a custom suspension using coil springs and passive shocks. The race car also features dual rear shocks to support a 145-gallon fuel tank, three spare tires, built-in hydraulic jacks, and onboard spare parts and tools. A street-legal version would require suspension adjustments for road use, a wheel and tire package suitable for public roads, and modified fender flares to accommodate the 72.1-inch track width. The race truck’s approach, breakover, and departure angles come from a 14.6-inch ground clearance and Bilstein shocks, with a twin-turbo V8 limited to roughly 400 horsepower under Dakar rules. A production model would have full engine output available. Land Rover is also considering a customer racing program, selling D7X-R vehicles to private teams with full factory support. Estimated cost for a fully built, race-ready D7X-R for privateers is around $350,000, offering a connection to consumer vehicles under the T2 class while keeping racing more accessible.
