What inspires you? The kilt is a single garment that can be used for dozens of different looks -- from super casual to regally formal. Theoretically, getting the kilt is easy. But most of us have a vision in our heads of how we want to look and feel once we have the kilt and put it on. We all have a few "perfect kilt outfits" in our imaginations as we get into this "kilted lifestyle." Heck, that's half the reason USA Kilts has a YouTube Channel! Most of us don't want to trust to luck. We want to assemble our outfits carefully for maximum impact. Are there good or bad ways to arrive at an outfit? What are some good ways to research Highland Dress? Is it okay to "break the rules"? Here's a basic plan... First, learn the most common customs and traditional stylings before you experiment. Look at lots and lots and lots of pictures online. get to know the good from the bad and the ugly. Facebook groups are very good for this (if you're not a member of 'Kilts & Culture' - come on in!). Google image searches and Pinterest are excellent tools. In fact, you may want to create a Pinterest board where you can collect images of your favorite kilt outfits. Think of it as a a future buying guide as you start to look for accessories to go with the kilt. Next, start simple. Craft just one casual kilt outfit. Come up with a basic casual load-out you'd like to wear to the pub, or to a festival, or just grocery shopping - any low pressure environment. The fewer "moving parts" there are to your outfit the less you'll worry about whether something looks right or fits well. Yes, this all may seem like a no-brainer. What's the big deal? But trust me, it has been our experience over the years that even very confident men will somehow get really nervous the first time they kilt up in public. Like just adding a kilt into the mix throws their assumptions about everything else they wear into question. So allow yourself baby steps. Enjoy just seeing what shirts you own that are nice color matches for your tartan. That sort of thing. Next, return to your image collection and dream a bit. Do you have a party coming up or some other big 'To-Do' like a friend's wedding? How do you want to look for that? Try adding a jacket to your collection based on one of your favorite kilt looks. Or maybe invest in something as simple as a fresh pair of colored kilt hose. This is where the fun comes in! Remember, that you have all the time in the world to collect the items you want. Stay in budget if you need to. Plan ahead if it is a big purchase like a tweed jacket. Finally, you'll reach a point where you decide you want a second kilt. Refer again to your favorite images of men in kilts. Do you want something similar to your current kilt, just nicer? Or a variant of your family tartan like Muted or Hunting? Or a cheaper kilt you can get dirty and mess around in? What accessories will go with this kilt that you already own? Hopefully you get the idea by now, so go out there and poke around.
