Ena Naito is an interdisciplinary design researcher, working at the intersection between biology, design, and co-learning. Her PhD research investigates how makerspaces can be used to cultivate sustainability competencies, particularly through the integration of biodesign into learning processes. As part of the EU-funded CoCoon – Co-Creating Greener Futures project, Ena works across five European institutions to develop sustainable methodologies and advocate for innovative uses of bio-based materials. Additionally, she is developing and running the pilot bioMakerStudio at Aalto University, where she develops new approaches to biodesign education. Before her doctoral work, Ena completed her master's thesis at the School of Arts, Design, and Architecture at Aalto University, where she developed The Asymptotes. This experimental project combined the concept of "hydro-logy" with creative nonfiction writing, offering a unique method of research that resists traditional linearity and categorization. Ena’s thesis explored the interconnectedness of materials and knowledge, using a fluid, embodied approach to research that informs both creative and academic practices. This conference took place on the 28th of February 2025 at the Learning Planet Institute in Paris. The event was organised by a team of master students: Maxim Velli, Louise Massacrier, Vincent Accion, Zoe Lina Wehmeyer, Lucas Chassatte, Elnaz Nematollahi. This conference aimed to bring together a vibrant community of biodesign enthusiasts, showcasing inspiring projects through a poster session, insightful talks, and opportunities to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. Together, we’ll explore how we can “grow a biodesigner” within ourselves.
