Wide of police officers standing in the streets on patrol STORYLINE Thousands of Palestinian police began deploying in Gaza City late on Wednesday, the first phase of a security plan approved by the Cabinet, a Palestinian official said. About three thousand armoured police were fanning out across the city and checking vehicles at checkpoints. An aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, told The Associated Press that the national security forces had been deployed around the city. Police were seen on street corners and patrolling in official vehicles. However, details of the security plan were unclear. the first phase, set to last one hundred days, covered traffic and crime fighting, officials said. The overall goal was to put an end to the chaos and violent infighting that has plagued Gaza, they said. The other phases of the security plan were not clear, but they apparently did not include efforts to stop Palestinian militant rocket attacks against Israel, the officials said. Abbas ordered implementation of the plan after a series of meetings with Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh. Abbas' Fatah group and Haniyeh's Hamas are sharing power in a national unity government, and control over security forces has been a main area of dispute between them. Hamas has its own force, and it was unclear how it would fit in to the new security plan. Fatah has long demanded that the Hamas force be dismantled, but Hamas has refused.
