When this locked boundary finally failed, it did not break at a single point but tore open along a fault stretching over 1,300 kilometers, making it one of the longest earthquake ruptures ever recorded, with shaking that lasted far longer than typical earthquakes. This sudden release of energy caused large sections of the seafloor to rise and sink by several meters within minutes, violently displacing billions of tonnes of seawater and generating powerful tsunami waves that spread outward in all directions across the Indian Ocean. Unlike wind-driven waves, these tsunami waves carried energy through the entire water column, allowing them to travel thousands of kilometers at jet-aircraft speeds and grow dramatically in height as they reached shallow coastal waters. Coastal communities in Indonesia were hit within minutes, while India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and even parts of Africa were struck hours later, leading to massive loss of life, destruction of ports, roads, homes, fishing livelihoods, coral reefs, and long-term environmental damage. More than 230,000 people were killed, millions were displaced, and entire coastal landscapes were permanently altered. Megathrust earthquakes are especially dangerous because they occur at major plate boundaries, release the largest amounts of seismic energy on Earth, last longer than most earthquakes, and have the unique ability to generate ocean-wide tsunamis capable of devastating multiple countries from a single geological event, making them one of the greatest natural threats faced by coastal regions worldwide. ✅ Subscribe To Our Other YouTube Channels: Theneer Idaivelai: / @theneeridaivelai Naattu Nadappu: / @naattunadappu Skiddy: / @skiddytamil Lets Dance: / @letsdance3608 Welcome to Streetlight!
