A supreme “maximum rock’n’soul” pulverizer from legendary Ikette/Mirette Jessie Smith under the pseudonym Little Miss Jessie! Though its on Chicago’s, Mel-O Records, this one is as St. Louis as it gets. Bandleader Benny Sharp was a St. Louis guitar god who inspired Ike Turner and was his stiffest local competition before Ike and Tina split to Los Angeles. Benny Sharp’s Orchestra was also known as The Zorros of Rhythm, The New Breed, and later, and most famously, The Sharpees. Record collectors know The Sharpees from their excellent run of sides on George and Ernie Leaner’s One-Derful label - particularly the huge dancefloor classic “Do The 45.” Jessie Smith was a featured vocalist and the show-stealer in Sharp’s band when she was at the same time moonlighting in the original incarnation of the Ikettes. Smith soon became a part of the vocal group’s classic lineup and can be heard on a number of the early Ike and Tina hits and most of The Ikettes biggest numbers - including her wild lead on “Peaches ’n’ Cream.” When “Peaches ’n’ Cream” started climbing the pop charts, Ike kept Ikettes Robbie Montgomery, Venetta Fields, and Jessie Smith in the Ike and Tina Revue while he created an all new version of the band that hadn’t appeared on the recordings to tour behind the single and appear on TV shows lip-synching their hit. Montgomery, Fields, and Smith weren’t amused, quit the review, and, since Ike owned their name, went out on their own to record and tour as The Mirettes. If your keep this one rolling, I tacked the B-Side, Sharp's blues guitar instrumental "St Louis Sunset Twist," on after "My Baby Has Gone." graphics by AVI SPIVAK (http://www.avispivak.com)!
