The somber melody of Ach Herr, mich armen Sünder (‘Ah Lord, me, a poor sinner’) is familiar from Bach’s St Matthew Passion, and, in the English-speaking world, is often sung to the words ‘O sacred head sore wounded’. In this setting by Dieterich Buxtehude (1637-1707), which only exists in a manuscript transcribed by Johann Gottfried Walther, the melody is given to the uppermost voice. The contrapuntal accompaniment skilfully embeds elements of the melody. The shape of the melody, with just a little ornamentation, is well preserved throughout, which suggests that this is a prelude intended to introduce the singing of the hymn. The organ of the Sint-Bavokerk, completed by Christiaan Müller in 1738 is one of the world's most historically important organs, not only for its beautiful sound but also for its magnificent case. Although completed some 30 years after the death of Buxtehude, the sound of the 8' Trechterregal (a common reed stop on North German organs which is used for the melody in this rendition) would have been familiar to him. #hauptwerk #voxusorgans #haarlemmüller
