Opposition presidential candidate Mahmoud Marei, of the Syrian Democratic Front

From Ruptly, 17 May 2021 The candidate for the opposition Syrian Democratic Front, Mahmoud Marei, spoke on Sunday about his electoral programme ahead of the start of the election campaign for presidential candidates in Syria. Speaking from Damascus, Marei identified some of his priorities as being “the release of prisoners of conscience, the kidnapped and the forcibly abducted, and the honouring of the families of the martyrs, in addition to the formation of a participatory national unity government with the real participation of the opposition. Also the preparation for a Syrian-Syrian conference in Damascus attended by the current political authority and the internal and external national opposition.” Marei stressed that his programme “is based on participation. A partnership between the opposition and the loyalists, participation in political life, participation in economic life, to secure a decent life for citizens.” He added, “I carry the programme of the national opposition and I carry a programme for all Syrians and for Syria. I am interested in a political settlement and a real political solution. I am interested in real participation. I am interested in the reconstruction of Syria.” Marei is the secretary-general of the Syrian opposition Democratic Front, secretary-general of the National Democratic Action Commission, and a member of the internal opposition negotiating delegation in Geneva. The Syrian Parliament has set May 26 as the date for polling in the presidential elections inside the country, and May 20 as the date for polling abroad. In addition to Marei, both the current President Bashar Al-Assad and the former deputy cabinet minister Abdullah Salloum Abdullah have been nominated.
