The JSW Centre for the Future of Law at NLSIU continued its online presentation series on contemporary scholarship with a lecture by Dr. Liz Fisher, Professor of Environmental Law at the University of Oxford, on October 27, 2025. In her talk, “Imagining the World: Environmental Problems and Legal Expertise,” Professor Fisher examined the often-misunderstood place of environmental law within legal thought. Drawing from a three-year research project involving archival work in Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, she challenged the view that environmental law is legally anomalous or outside conventional legal reasoning. The presentation highlighted the structural legal questions environmental law generates, the risks of wishful thinking in regulatory design, and the forms of legal expertise required to address complex environmental problems. This lecture forms part of the Centre’s ongoing series bringing leading scholars into dialogue on cutting-edge research at the intersection of law, regulation, and public policy. #NLSIU #FutureOfLaw #EnvironmentalLaw #LegalScholarship #Regulation
