When you think of the great prep to pro players throughout NBA history, the usual names come to mind like Kevin Garnett, Tracy McGrady, Dwight Howard, etc. But then there’s Al Harrington who doesn’t always included in the conversation of successful players to come straight out of high school. His career walks and interesting rope, as he wasn’t a bust like a lot of players straight out of high school, but he wasn’t a star either, but he stuck around the league for over a decade and half as a stretch 4 type player before they were common. He was a first round draft pick of the Indiana Pacers straight out St. Patrick’s High School, and played sparingly on a team with Reggie Miller and Jalen Rose. Then once he finally got an opportunity, the Pacers had also added Jermaine O’Neal and Ron Artest, so he would be an effective sixth man, but he wanted to be a starter and showed he could be over two years with the Atlanta Hawks alongside Joe Johnson and Josh Smith. Then he would play a huge role on the We Believe Warriors. He had his best years on some bad New York Knicks team, then joined a Carmelo Anthony led Denver Nuggets team as a sixth man, before Melo got traded to New York, yet after playing through injury in 2012, Harrington developed an infection after knee surgery, which essentially derailed his final years. But his NBA career is going to become an afterthought due to what he’s accomplished post playing career.
