Stuff like - can you recycle this - or what bin should that item go into? One of the most common household items in Australia - and worldwide - is tin foil - or aluminium foil - sometimes called aluminum by our American cousins. This common item is used for everything from wrapping food - to in a hairdressers when clients are getting their hair coloured. So - can it be recycled - and if so how? Act 2 - Put simply - aluminium foil is 100% recyclable - and recycling saves roughly 95% of the energy required to make new aluminium - so it is great for the environment. Clean aluminium foil - in the form of food trays - or tin foil - can be recycled in a yellow commingle bin - with some caveats of course. It goes in the commingle bin - alongside aluminium drinks cans - which as basically the same material. The first caveat - is that the foil should be clean - meaning wipe of any excess food or other waste. The second caveat - is that if it is tin foil - you need to scrunch it up into a ball - then throw in the bin - i.e. do not leave as a sheet - as this will be extremely difficult for the recycling machines to filter out. Alternatively, you can put smaller pieces of foil into an aluminium can before placing it in the recycling bin. Act 3 - You may sometimes ask yourself - if a material is actually aluminium foil - or if it is a type of plastic -such as packaging for an Easter Egg. A simple test is to scrunch it up in a ball - if it stays in the ball and does not expand - it is foil - if it pops back up - it is likely foil covered plastic - and should go in your general waste. Hopefully - that is one more item you can put in your recycling bin - and not in landfill For lots more recycling info - visit us at waster.com.au - and like and subscribe below.
