After leaving Yumthang Valley and Lachung behind in North Sikkim, one of the most unforgettable stretches of our road trip was heading down through Chungthang with its stunning turquoise blue waters before turning southwards toward Tarey Bhir. I’d hired a private taxi for our 10-day Sikkim journey thanks to Sikkim Cab Rental Co, and as the landscape changed from alpine peaks to rolling green valleys, I knew we were in for something special. Reaching Tarey Bhir near Sadam village in South Sikkim felt almost surreal. Bhir means cliff in the local Nepali language, and this place truly lives up to its name — a long, narrow ridge of cliff edge stretching about 10,000 feet with a near vertical drop of around 3,500 feet into the valley below. The elevation here is approximately 10,000 feet above sea level, so the air was crisp and cool, perfect for soaking in the views. There’s a stone-paved pathway with steps carved along the ridge that leads you to the best vantage points, and while there’s no big temple complex like in Namchi, you’ll often see small local shrines with prayer flags fluttering in the breeze, blending Hindu and Buddhist traditions seamlessly into the landscape. From the edge, the views are jaw-dropping. I watched the Teesta and Rangit rivers meet far below, their waters weaving through the valley like silver threads. On a clear day you can even spot Kalimpong and Darjeeling hills in the distance, all framed by lush forests and rolling tea gardens. Here’s how the distances shaped up on our trip: Gangtok to Tarey Bhir: ~70 km (~2 hrs) by road. Namchi to Tarey Bhir: ~16 km (~30–40 min). Lachung to Tarey Bhir: Around 180+ km (long full-day drive). Reaching Tarey Bhir was one of my favourite parts of the Sikkim tour — a peaceful, awe-inspiring cliff that felt like the heaven of Sikkim. How to Reach Tarey Bhir, South Sikkim The easiest way to reach Tarey Bhir is from Gangtok or Namchi. The distance from Gangtok to Tarey Bhir is about 70 kilometres, and it takes roughly 2 hours by road. The route passes through Ranipool, Singtam, and Sadam village. From Namchi, Tarey Bhir is only 16 kilometres away and can be reached in 30–40 minutes by taxi. The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), and the nearest airport is Bagdogra. From there, hiring a taxi is the most convenient way to reach Tarey Bhir. Watch my other Vlogs in Sikkim Playlist • Temi Tea Estate. Offbeat Budget Travel to ...
