Jacob and Hannah Leverton were Quaker abolitionists and agents of the Underground Railroad. Their home served as a sanctuary and stopping ground for those seeking freedom from slavery during the 1840s and 1850s. However, in January 1858, they were exposed after helping a battered young girl escape her owner. Jacon soon died afterwards and their son Arthur, along with their neighbor free-black Daniel Hubbard, had to run away to escape an angry mob. The Leverton House is part of the National Park Service Network To Freedom Underground Railroad Trail and the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway. Honoring the efforts of the Laverton’s and their neighbors, Jonah and Esther Kelley and Daniel Hubbard who provided a safe haven for those who were enslaved. This is one of twelve properties documented in partnership with Preservation Maryland.
