We were so excited to welcome everyone back to Nine Lessons & Carols this Advent season. We hope it was an opportunity to slow down, to listen, and to direct your attention and affections on the God who made you, who loves you, and who has come to redeem you. HISTORY OF NINE LESSONS & CAROLS The first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols took place on Christmas Eve of 1918 and was planned by Eric Milner-White. At just thirty-four, he was appointed Dean of King’s College in Cambridge, England, and was convinced that the Church of England needed more imaginative worship. E.W. Benson had inspired Milner-White, later the Archbishop of Canterbury, who wrote a similar service in 1880 in Truro, England. At the time, a tiny wooden shed served as the cathedral for the community. At 10 PM on Christmas Eve, a congregation gathered for nine carols and nine lessons, read by various church officers. After Milner-White’s service in 1918, other churches adapted the service for their own use. It has been broadcast almost every year since 1928. Even during the Second World War, with the ancient stained glass (and all heat) removed from the Chapel, the service went ahead, though they could not broadcast the name of King’s College for security reasons. In these and other ways, the service has become public property. From time to time, the College receives copies of services held worldwide, showing how widely the tradition has spread. Their yearly broadcasts, too, have become part of Christmas for many. Reports of services heard in a tent on the foothills of Everest or in the desert are commonplace. Last year, Redeemer celebrated its fourteenth Nine Lessons & Carols. Over the years, we have held this service in Woodrow Hall, Cornerstone Elementary, our sanctuary in Avondale, and the Lyric Theatre, where we are today. Wherever the service is heard or experienced, the lessons are the core of its strength. The central theme is the development of the loving purposes of God seen through the windows and words of the Bible. The service’s center is still found by those who go – in heart and mind – and follow where the Story leads. ABOUT REDEEMER Redeemer Community Church exists to celebrate and declare the gospel of God as we grow in knowing and following Jesus Christ.
