Debussy indicated that the rythme of this prelude should have "la valeur sonore d`un fond de paysage triste et glacé " and further when the second theme appears "comme un tendre et triste regret". A compulsive two notes main theme (re-mi), very few notes in general and maximum emotional impact. Freezing the feelings is an attempt to cut off from the sources coming from earth, the irrational. In vain. It is so much nourishing when the connection is restored. This comes to my mind when I listen to this work. Claude Debussy (1862-1918) composed his Livre I of preludes, where "des pas sur la neige" belongs, in 1910. (Footprints on the snow). Walter Gieseking (1895-1956) studied with Karl Leimer and later was the professor of Albert Ferber. He recorded the preludes in 1953. It was the first complete recording of this work ever and still a reference. EMI. An austere, straight to the point rendering of the score. He is maybe using the fastest tempo for this prelude (except Cortot), but the result is still amazing. The photos are mine. Enjoy.
