Debussy indicated that the rythme of this prelude should have "la valeur sonore d`un fond de paysage triste et glacé " and further when the second theme appears "comme un tendre et triste regret". A compulsive two notes main theme (re-mi), very few notes in general and maximum emotional impact. Freezing the feelings is an attempt to cut off from the sources coming from earth, the irrational. Claude Debussy (1862-1918) composed his Livre I of preludes, where "des pas sur la neige" belongs, in 1910. (Footprints on the snow). Walter Gieseking (1895-1956) studied with Karl Leimer and later was the professor of Albert Ferber. He recorded the preludes in 1953. It was the first complete recording of this work ever and still a reference. EMI. An austere, straight to the point rendering of the score.
