(4 Jul 2001) 1. Set up shot of Musharraf on couch 2. SOUNDBITE (Urdu) General Pervez Musharraf, Pakistani President: "As far as Pakistan is concerned we always have said that while discussing the Kashmir issue there should be no conditions. If they ask us to stop cross border terrorism or to reduce tension in Kashmir then first of all we are not patronizing the freedom struggle inside Kashmir, it is Kashmiries who themselves are struggling for freedom, the second thing is that to reduce the Kashmiri struggle, there should be reduction in the atrocities, the human rights violations being committed by the Indian Military and also reduce 0.6 million Indian army. Both the sides should discuss without any conditions. Now when Indian Prime Minister has extended an invitation to me I am very glad that Indian Prime Minister Vajpayee has not put any conditions. So in my opinion it is a good opportunity to discuss the Kashmir issue without any conditions." 3. Cutaway 4. SOUNDBITE (Urdu) General Pervez Musharraf, Pakistani President: "There is nothing special in it, there will be pressure on both sides to act in a responsible way. Both countries are nuclear powers. But in my opinion both sides have seen that they have suffered huge losses in the past 50 years. Now the time has come that this Kashmir dispute should be resolved in a peaceful manner. So this is the basic reason that we are starting talks." 5. Cutaway 6. SOUNDBITE (Urdu) General Pervez Musharraf, Pakistani President: "The issue of not firing first , I have been talking of a step beyond this that we should sign a "No war Pact",we should stop war." 7. SOUNDBITE (Urdu) General Pervez Musharraf, Pakistani President: "Yes definitely I would like to see my birth place "Nehar Wali Hawali in Delhi". But for this reason I will not change the main focus of my visit - that is the Kashmir issue, I would like to spend most of my time discussing the Kashmir dispute with full concentration, so that there could be a possibility of peace between both India and Pakistan." 8. Cutaway STORYLINE: Better relations between India and Pakistan are impossible without first resolving the dispute over Kashmir, the Himalayan region that has ignited two of three wars between the two South Asian neighbors, Pakistan's president said in an interview. "I hope the one thing that we want to achieve quite unambiguously is the core issue is Kashmir," President Gen. Pervez Musharraf said in an exclusive interview late Tuesday with The Associated Press and Associated Press Television News. Musharraf said his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee July 14-16 in New Delhi will be the first time leaders on both sides will sit down with Kashmir on the agenda. Looking relaxed after a tennis game and dressed in a grey suit and purple tie, the military leader who seized power in a 1999 bloodless coup said he hoped Indian leaders shared his sincerity about reaching an accord over Kashmir. After Pakistan was carved out of a divided India in 1947 following the end of British rule, the fate of the princely state of Kashmir was left undecided by the old colonial rulers. India took two-thirds of the lush green Himalayan region, and Pakistan seized the rest, fomenting a row that continues to this day. Pakistan supports a 1989 uprising in Kashmir, the only Muslim-majority state in Hindu-dominated India. New Delhi accuses Pakistan of sponsoring Islamic militants who launch cross-border raids from secret camps on the border. Pakistan claims India has 600,000 troops in Kashmir.
