Reena Esmail's Clarinet Concerto, a Sneak Peak

Composer Reena Esmail Zoom-coaches John Kurokawa and Neal Gittleman on her Clarinet Concerto, which the Dayton Philharmonic performs on "East Meets West", January 7th and 8th at 8pm at the Schuster Center. This wonderful piece, which blends Eastern and Western musical traditions, was written in 2017 for Shankar Tucker, a clarinetist trained in both Western classical music and Hindustani classical music. This past summer, to make the piece playable by soloists not trained to improvise in ragas, Reena transcribed Shankar's improvs. John and the DPO will be giving the first performance of this revised version of the concerto. If you're anywhere near Dayton on January 7th or 8th, don't miss it. It's a FABULOUS piece, and will be played along with music by Charles Griffes, Mozart, and Richard Strauss.
