TEM is a minimally invasive procedure that removes rectal tumors and early stage rectal cancers. Previously, surgery to remove rectal tumors always required an abdominal incision TEM allows certain types of early stage rectal cancers or benign rectal polyps may be removed using a minimally invasive procedure requiring no surgical incision. TEM is performed through the rectum with specially designed microsurgical instruments which can remove lesions high inside the rectum. With TEM, the colorectal surgeon has a longer reach and better visibility into the rectum. With TEM paitents benefit from the following: No abdominal incision, less bleeding, less risk of infection and complications, less risk of bowel obstructions post-surgery, shorter hospital stay; and, faster recovery and return to normal activities.
