Shadow Workplace Relations Minister Michaelia Cash claims the industrial relations reforms were never about labour hire as she criticised the government for rushing the bill through with “no debate”. Employment Minister Tony Burke reached a deal with the crossbench to split the contentious Closing Loopholes Bill into two parts. The bill will include the criminalisation of intentional wage theft and a new offence of industrial manslaughter. More support for workers in the gig economy will be legislated, and they will be regarded as employees. The laws have attracted widespread criticism from the business sector across Australia. “I think what you saw today more than anything was this is a government that talked big on transparency – well, where was the transparency today?” Ms Cash told Sky News Australia. “Where was the discussion with the employers this week saying ‘we’ve struck a deal with the crossbench, and guess what? We are going to bring forward parts of this bill’.”
