Cenhinen Bedr a Cynwyd Daffodils and Dargason by Adrienne Wilson For Pedal Harp Performed by Bethan Conway. PoppyHarp Composers Projecy 2025 Daffodil grew out of the words of Madeleine L'Engle: 'A daffodil pushing up through the dark earth to the spring, knowing some how deep in its roots that spring and light and sunshine will come, has more courage and more knowledge of the value of life than any human being I've met.' Opening with a bell-like heralding of Spring, the ground is still cold however and the first song heard is melancholic and modal. The mood is never allowed to settle for long though as the colours change and new melodies appear. With a nod to my Welsh and English heritage the piece journeys towards the joyful folk dance Cynwyd (in Welsh) or Dargason (in English). Although returning to the cold, the piece finishes with the harp again pushing through the dark earth with harmonic points of light. Adrienne studied clarinet and recorder, as a Junior Exhibitioner and then full time, at the Royal Academy of Music. After many years of teaching music in a range of capacities including instrumental and classroom, she took the bold decision to return to education herself to pursue a Masters Degree and PhD in composition at King’s College, London. Her focus is the immersion of both the performers and audience in the compositional process. Her ‘spare’ time is taken up with her grandson, plants, four cats, knitting and crochet, performing, watching horror and four children – in no particular order!
