The couple won the final free dance portion of the three-stage competition by a 5-4 judges' verdict over their challengers Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko, also of the Soviet Union, who had to be content once more with the silver medal. Canadians Tracy Wilson and Robert McCall snatched the bronze medal from the third Soviet couple, Natalya Annenko and Genrikh Sretensky. The copper-haired Bestemianova and her tall, commanding partner were aware of the very high marks awarded Klimova and Ponomarenko when they took the ice. Kimova-Ponomarenko skated to a selection of Strauss Danubiana numbers and received eight marks of 5.9 and one 6.0, the highest mark, for artistic impression. But Bestemianova and Bukhin laid out a fiery, romantic and tragic story to a rhapsody on a Paganini theme that won over the critical number of judges. As in the recent European championships in Copenhagen, Bestemianova-Bukhin champions were bested by their Soviet competitors, Klimova-Ponomarenko, in the original set pattern dance, the second stage of the three-part ice dancing competition. 'We were not very happy about the public's response (in Copenhagen), so in four weeks we changed everything, the music, the mood, the steps, the costumes, too, said Bestemianova, explaining the appearance of their new routine. Trainer [Tatiana] Tarasova said although they lost the original set pattern again, the champions were happy with what they had done in so short a time. Bernard Ford, coach to Wilson and McCall, said the pair had brought Canada its first medal in ice dance in 22 years. 'My kids are happy, not so much about the medal, but the fact that at last we are getting recognition of the direction which we want to take in dancing.' The Canadian duo's free program was skated to three themes, samba, a strict tempo waltz and then rock and roll. ------------- March 23, 1986 12 AM PT, Associated Press GENEVA — Soviet ice dancers Natalia Bestemianova and Andrei Bukin struck a series of sculptured poses in a splashy and sinuous routine to win their second straight world title Saturday. The pair combined precision with passion in a dramatic finale to the 1986 World Figure Skating Championships. In Saturday’s closing event, the Moscow ice dance pair drew three perfect 6.0 scores for artistry and bravos from a sellout crowd at Vernets Sports Center with their four-minute program to rhapsodic music and piano crescendos. The performance turned back a threat from stylish compatriots Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko, who finished second. Canadians Tracy Wilson and Robert McCall were third. The 26-year-old Bestemianova, wearing a sleek black leotard with deep V’s in front and back, and Bukin, 28, finished with a factored placement total of 2.4, followed by Klimova and Ponomarenko at 3.6. --- --- #figureskating #フィギュアスケート #eiskunstlauf #фигурноекатание #pattinaggioartistico #patinageartistique #icedance thanks to Kim!
