In June 1995, South Africa hosted the Rugby World Cup. Between Nelson Mandela’s release and inauguration, almost 15k people had died by political violence. In the turbulent first year since Apartheid’s end, the tournament took on a new significance for a nation divided and recovering from years of economic sanctions that helped defeat the Apartheid state. On and off the pitch, South Africa now had to prove itself to the international community and heal decades of division, violence and hatred on the world stage. During the tournament, All Blacks player Jonah Lomu emerged as powerhouse and international celebrity, delivering victory in every match until the final against South Africa. A media frenzy surrounding the 20-year-old insisted on an All Black’s victory as the final against South Africa’s Springboks neared. During this time reports of threats and poisonings against Mandela’s team and multiple players would also surface. Within this context, the Springboks’ victory against the All Blacks on 24 June would transcend the tournament and sport. It would stand as a monument to nation building and the fortitude of Nelson Mandela, encapsulated in Springbok Captain Francois Pienaar’s response to a journalist, that they had 60k supporters in the stadium, but 43 million across the country. This edit covers ITN’s coverage of the one of the most famous sporting events in modern history. #rugby #worldcup #rugbyworld #1995 #allblacks #jonahlomu #history #sportshistory #politics #nelsonmandelaquotes #morganfreeman #mattdamon #invictus #apartheid #allblacks #springboks #francoispienaar #southafricanhistory #cyrilramaphosa #africannationalcongress #southafricanpolitics #internationalrelations To license the footage featured in this clip, follow the link below: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/search/... _______ To search the ITN Archive collection on Getty Images, follow the link below: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/footage... 🎥 Subscribe to our YouTube channel (tap the bell icon and stay up to date with all the latest ITN Archive videos!) - / @itnarchive 🎥 Follow us on Twitter - / itnarchive 🎥 Like us on Facebook - / itnarchiveitnp 🎥 Check out our TikTok - / itnarchive1955
