ARGENTINA: CALL FOR THE ARREST OF ALLEGED DEATH CAMP COMMANDER

(9 Apr 1998) Spanish/Nat Argentine authorities have petitioned for the arrest of a 76-year-old Croat who has been accused of running a World War Two Nazi-death camp. Dinko Sakic was named in a television documentary as the man who commanded the Jasenovac concentration camp from December 1942 to October 1944. Up to 600-thousand Jews, Serbs and gypsies are believed to have died in the camp when Croatia was under Nazi rule. This is the normally quiet Argentine town of Santa Teresita. But, on Wednesday, news broke it was home to an alleged Second World War Croatian Nazi responsible for the death of 600-thousand Serbs, Jews and Gypsies. This is where the man, quietly spoken 76-year-old Dinko Sakic, lives. He has lived openly in Argentina for fifty years. The allegations against him were made in a television documentary on his running of the Jasenovac Concentration Camp in Croatia. Sakic commanded the camp from 1942 and 1944 and told reporters treatment there had been humane. Neighbours were surprised to learn of allegations which suggested he was a fascist war criminal. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Nobody knew anything. I learnt about it yesterday because it was on the television. That's all I can say because he got on well with kids, my children, the girls spent time with the wife every now and then but really they were people who..." Q: "You never imagined?" A: "No. Never. Apart from anything else the wife was very caring, he was not suspicious because he goes out shopping and he comes back. They were not people who..." SUPER CAPTION: Maria Isabel, neighbour The Argentine government petitioned the federal court for his arrest following the television programme. In Zagreb on Wednesday, Croatian Jews called for his extradition in order to face trial in his own country. Sakic's friends and relatives vehemently deny the claims and the Croat himself has gone into hiding. His landlord first rented the house to Sakic a year ago. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "In the time that I have spent talking to him he seemed an excellent person. What came out in the news, in the bulletins really caught my attention. It was a great shock But, in all sincerity, I could not believe it. SUPER CAPTION: Eduardo Tasselli, Sakic's landlord Sakic intended to spend his time in Santa Teresita writing. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The little that I knew was that this man came here to write a book on Croatia, which he did. He wrote the book here in Santa Teresita and he promised me that he would give me one when it was translated into Spanish. And, he said that this book had been asked for by the President of Croatia, since he was one of the last remaining survivors from that era. And he asked him to tell the world the truth about Croatia and the truth about Serbia. Something I don't know about." SUPER CAPTION: Eduardo Tasselli, Sakic's landlord Sakic's house currently stands empty as he is believed to be in Buenos Aires. A family spokesman confirmed on Wednesday that when summoned, Sakic would attend court. The allegations are a blow to Argentine authorities who are desperate to shake off the image of being a Nazi haven for the likes of Adolf Eichmann and Martin Bormann. Former Nazi resident Erich Priebke was extradited to Italy in 1995.
