Snorkeling in Jellyfish Lake in Palau

Located within the rock islands of Palau, Micronesia lies four lakes that are home to millions of jellyfish! Only one of these lakes is open to the public for swimming and snorkeling. No scuba diving is allowed as the bubbles are too damaging to the jellyfish and below 50 feet (15 meters) the water is filled with hydrogen sulfide which is toxic. The lakes are closed off from the ocean other than cracks in the surrounding rock that let in some of the salty seawater, making the lake water brackish. After thousands of years of living secluded from the ocean, the jellyfish (mostly golden jellyfish as well as some moon jellyfish) have developed a rather unique characteristic. Instead of feeding on prey, they photosynthesize through algae that live on their skin.
