My European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) pre bonsai, which is growing in the ground, gets a hard pruning with the aim of developing a new apex. I've been growing this European hornbeam pre bonsai directly in the ground to help with a faster development. While it did have vigorous growth in each growing season, the apex of the tree is pretty much missing. So this is why I am hard pruning my hornbeam pre bonsai. Pruning an European hornbeam is done pretty much like for any other hornbeam or most deciduous species. Unwanted branches are completely removed and all the remaining ones are cut back to promote apical growth. I am hoping that a new acceptable apex will eventually develop and then I can also concentrate on the branch structure. I did no work on the root system yet but the surface roots that can be already noticed look promising. The long term plan is of course to dig it up someday and transform it into a hornbeam bonsai.
