~ Tim rose was born in washington d.c. but spent much of his life in the u.k. and europe where he was most popular....normally a solo performer the debut album (tim rose on cbs records '67...) featured some of the very best session players to be found anywhere...bernard purdie/jay berliner/ernie hayes/eric weissberg/hugh mccrachan/charlie smalls etc...it did contain a much longer version of this song but i've choosen the short single take from '66...rose had a gruff and raw sounding song delivery and that lends it's self well to the song which at one point he claimed to have written along with another warhorse 'morning dew' (that though was written by bonnie dobson..)...the song infact started life as 'baby please dont go to town' by new york female folk/country blues singer niela miller who in '61 laid down a series of tracks and it's from the only acetate to survive that a small record company 'numerophon records' released it as 'songs of leaving' in 2009...her boyfriend of the time one william (billy) roberts himself a singer/writer 'borrowed' the song and rearranged it to the form that we know and love...he also claimed to have written the song and for years got royalties along with another who claimed credit for writing it a 'chester powers/jesse farrow' who was infact dino valente!!!! he later gave up the credit....here though rose is third on the bill at the fillmore but i wonder if this was a solo gig or with a road band?
