MAN! This was a long time coming. I had this edited and graded by the end of December, but I was left with this overall feeling of dissatisfaction. So there was this void for a week or two where I hadn't made anything, and the last thing I did make was the first draft of this video and I just didn't know what to do with myself. In the pursuit of something creative, I made that logo at the beginning of the video. It felt like something I had to get out, so I sat down and did it. I like it. It's simple and it is unique to me. Anyone could recreate it in a few minutes probably, but I am proud that it is an idea that came from my own head and not anybody else's. Even if it's bad, I can still pride myself on originality. I saw a song titled "Be Yourself or Die Dreaming" today. It was alright, but I liked the title a lot, and that is sort of how I feel about the logo. This is a lot to go on about something that lasts two seconds. I'd rather try and make something okay than not try and make something that is soulless. Maybe I've been hanging out too much with Johnny Silverhand. 25+ hours logged in the past three days. Moving on (thank God). I noticed a few technical hiccups in the first draft that were going to be a pain in the butt to fix, so I pushed off working on this project. Grading was time-consuming and going nowhere. A "final" grade had been applied to the video, but this was after already grading it once and then completely starting over. It was about 16 minutes in length, and now I think it is about 13. "A Cloak of Elvenkind" fit perfectly over the awkwardly quiet first three minutes of the video, and then left another 30 or so seconds of silence as I took my shoes off and went to bed for the first night. Marcy Playground is one of those bands, like R.E.M. or The Shins, that I always have a song of theirs bouncing around in my head, on the conveyor belt waiting to get turned into mulch and graciously used in a Cooper's Excellent Adventure. I hadn't planned on it for this video though. I noticed how quiet the beginning was, in no small part due to me not using my shotgun mic, and instead relying on camera body audio, which I REGRET EVERY TIME. So, I just sort of squeezed the song into place, and it worked surprisingly well! But it felt off. It just felt like exactly what I did was done to it. there was no intentionality to it. That, and the beginning was 3.5 minutes long, which is a big ask when it is just you walking around a house. I wanted to re-edit that whole portion and shave it down considerably. I ended up taking out about two minutes of footage from that section. And it wasn't stuff that will never see the light of day. It was just the same shots I had, but they went on for eight, loooooooong seconds, as opposed to three seconds. That helped the pacing a lot. The beginning is now a merciful two minutes long. I also couldn't figure out the comedic timing of the bathroom shot, honestly in either edit, but that part used to be an unbearable and embarrassing 20 or so seconds long because I just don't know when to cut sometimes. I still cringe at that part, but now it's like five seconds. Hallelujah. So with that re-edited, and a few tech hiccups later, I was ready to begin grading again! I took a bigger swing than I normally do with this one, and actually went for a style. I have no idea how YouTube will destroy this video in the uploading process. Hopefully it isn't too bad. There is grain added to this footage, and it is subtle, but noticeable at 4K. YouTube famously has no idea what to do with grain and will completely mangle the look of videos, so this will be something of a litmus test moving forward. There should be a level of softness to this video that comes through even through all of the compression, and that is intended. I tried to keep this one from looking TOO digital. A Refreshing Break is a play on the last name Fresh. I house sat for Heather and Rocky Fresh over Christmas break, and that, alongside the "Wish I Were Heather" sticker at the end, were easter eggs intended for them. Though I would be a fool to let my creativity and genius go unannounced, so HERE I AM, 4,200 characters deep into a YouTube description, declaring my creativity and genius. HAHAHAHA. One day I will get the recognition I so desperately deserve... Oh yeah! I've had a fever for the last five days. That sort of is the whole reason I got around to finally finishing this fucking fproject. That is the silver lining. Upcoming projects. I started working on one called "The Sound of a Woman's Skirt Ruffling," that I'm excited about, but I can't really complete it without the help of strangers, so it's on hold for now. I have another one where I'm sitting down, thinking about thinking, like the great philosopher So Crates, but that is as exciting to me as it is to you. I've reached the character limit, so I guess this is it. Hope you enjoy this one. Adios.
