Let's hope that scenes like these taken during an earlier phase in the long struggle are over and done with. Aggression in Korea was promptly met and gallantly withstood by forces of the United Nations and the decision to fight on this grim battlefield may perhaps have prevented an even more fearful clash of arms. Some two years truce negotiations dragged on at Panmunjon. Long ago terms were almost agreed between General Nam Il, head of the communist delegation and the representatives of the United Nations. But the prisoner of war question held up an armistice. Now with many representatives of both sides present a truce has been signed. Even if we are right to be guarded about future prospects in Korea, we can at least rejoice that for all the men who are bearing the burden of this war a halt has been called. " LEAD IN : In 1945 the Korean Peninsula was liberated from Japanese colonial rule at the end of World War II but eventually divided between a Soviet-supported North and a US-backed South. The North invaded the South in June 1950, starting a devastating war that was stopped three years later by an armistice, which was signed on July 27, 1953. STORYLINE: 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice signed on July 27, 1953. The Korean War armistice agreement was signed at Panmunjom, the so-called "truce village" bisected by a marker that is the official dividing line between North and South Korea. The armistice called for the creation of a military demarcation line and the demilitarized zone (DMZ) around it: a four kilometre (2.5 mile) -wide "buffer zone," with one side controlled by the American-led UN Command and the other side by North Korea. The armistice prohibited "hostile acts" within or across the zone. As a hotline between the sides, it set up a military truce commission at the Panmunjom village that straddles the DMZ.
