(7 Jan 2020) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus129048 More than 4,500 exhibitors are crowding Las Vegas convention centers for annual gadget show CES, but one exhibitor will be skipping the show due to their technology focus - cannabis. But CES officials say cannabis technology will likely have a place at the gadget show in the future as it is legalized in more places. "Since CES pretends to be a global a worldwide technology exposition, I think they're doing well and being careful what's to allow and to what extent things like recreational drugs can be promoted and can be displayed here," says analyst Werner Goertz from Gartner. Gary Shapiro, the president and CEO of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), which organizes CES defends the decision. "We draw lines and we have to we don't allow pornographic, we don't allow content where children are killed. We don't allow anything with vaping," he says. "And marijuana has been a tougher one for us, where I think we're waiting to see it's a little more legal around at least the country, we're heading in that direction. CES is hosted in Las Vegas where cannabis is legal. Now, Las Vegas is home to what's claimed to be the world's largest cannabis dispensary, Planet 13. Marketing specialist Brandon Zimmer was surprised by the CTA's decision. "Oh, yeah, I would say so just for the fact that CES is one of the innovators of technology and cannabis, as being as big as it is now, especially with so much stigma going around and new technology coming out. I'm surprised they can't show something involving cannabis," he says. Zimmer says cannabis tech is an exciting field, with lots of invention and new devices.
