"Shadow Dancer", "影舞者" is a 1989 Side-scrolling Action game developed and published by Sega, notable for being the first title built on the Sega System 18 hardware. A direct sequel to Shinobi (1987), the game casts players as a mysterious ninja on a mission to dismantle a terrorist organization wreaking havoc across the city. Aiding him in battle is his loyal attack dog, adding a unique twist to the classic ninja formula. Gameplay closely mirrors the original Shinobi, retaining familiar controls and combat mechanics. Players wield an unlimited supply of shuriken and a sword for close-range attacks. As they progress through each stage, they must collect time bombs to unlock the level's exit. Gathering half of these bombs grants temporary weapon upgrades, while three types of ninjutsu magic (ninpo) can be used to clear the screen of enemies—typically limited to one use per stage unless the player continues with additional credits. The standout feature is the ninja’s canine companion. The dog alerts players to nearby threats by barking, and can be commanded to attack enemies when the player crouches and presses the attack button. If the player fails to follow up quickly or the enemy resists, the dog is injured and temporarily transforms into a harmless pup until the next bomb is collected or the stage ends. The game spans four missions, each composed of multiple stages. Early stages focus on bomb collection, while the final stage of each mission culminates in a boss battle. These include a giant armored brute, a weaponized tank engine, a plate-hurling woman, and a magical female ninja wielding a naginata. Notably, the dog does not assist during boss fights. Between missions, players engage in a first-person bonus round where they throw shuriken at descending enemy ninjas. Successfully completing this minigame rewards an extra life. The narrative centers on a young ninja and his dog as they confront a terrorist syndicate responsible for planting explosives throughout the city. Their goal: recover the bombs and eliminate the organization behind the chaos. The protagonist’s identity varies across different versions. While unnamed in the arcade release, the Master System manual refers to him as Takashi, though the attract mode calls him Fuma. U.S. Gold’s home computer ports claim he is Joe Musashi, the original Shinobi hero, and promotional materials even reference characters from the Genesis adaptation Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi (1990), such as Kato and Sauros.
