NOAA is responsible for issuing volcanic ash advisories and SIGMETs for a large region that encompasses much of the western hemisphere. The NOAA/NESDIS VOLcanic Cloud Analysis Toolkit (VOLCAT), which utilizes data from a variety of meteorological satellites to automatically detect, track, and characterize volcanic thermal anomalies (hot spots) and hazardous clouds produced by eruptions, is commonly used to support operational decision making. I will present a brief overview on how VOLCAT supports Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) operations and highlight how many of the VOLCAT tools and concepts are pertinent to other applications, such as fires and dust. About the Presenter: Dr. Mike Pavolonis is a Physical Scientist at NESDIS/STAR. He leads a science team focused on utilizing artificial intelligence and other techniques to transform large volumes of environmental data into actionable information. Product systems developed by his team include the ProbSevere model, the Fog and Low Stratus (FLS) product suite, and the VOLCAT. Dr. Pavolonis also serves as the NESDIS lead for wildfire product planning, coordination, and user engagement.
