FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, Judy Brown, Skyla #1121 1961 Flipside: SHOULD I - Judy Brown was just one of many teenage girls who was able to record a few records and then probably went on with her life. Skyla Records also recorded a young girl, Linda Carr, and both were about 14 years old at the time. Judy Brown recorded at least 2 other records: “HEAVEN AND PARADISE/I’M SUCH A FOOL” (Fifo #104) 1961 “DEAR SANTA/CHRISTMAS WEDDING DAY” (Skyla #1122) 1961 Skyla Records was a short-lived record label in Hollywood, California started in 1960 by a woman named Starla Kay Rindoni (Starla Kaye Rindone) the wife of a clothing manufacturer/mob associate. Skyla Records was 1 ½ blocks from Hollywood Boulevard between Hollywood & Sunset. In the same building were music publishers Malkin & Hoffman (Winston/Bloor/Hoffman House group of publishers), right in the hub of the industry. Starla Kaye was at one time the girlfriend of Art Leboe (long-time radio announcer/DJ and owner of a “Starla Records” and of course, Original Sound Records) and kept some sort of relationship along the way. In addition to the more than 30 nationwide distributers that Kaye signed with when she started Skyla, Original Sound helped distribute, too. Art Laboe’s Drive-In-Music publishing is on some of the Skyla, Starla and Ray Star labels. As with many other record labels around the country, Skyla had a subsidiary (Ray Star) & shortly went defunct. Eventually, Leboe and Original Sound ended up with record inventory from Skyla, Ray Star and Double Shot. Skyla also recorded Jerry Naylor (Jackson) who went on to replace Buddy Holly as the frontman/lead singer of The Crickets during their Liberty label years. (Naylor appeared in 2 movies with them.) Given the history of this time in music, one where so many creative talents were starting in the business, it’s not a huge stretch to believe that the producer on “FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL/SHOULD I” was the same Dave (David) Axelrod (4/17/31-2/5/17) who, after working around in the business, became A&R and producer for Capitol Records (EMI) in 1963. He went on in the industry as an avant-garde producer fusing jazz, funk and soul through the years, right through all the changes in the music industry. It must have been an exciting time in the music business in the major cities like Los Angeles/Hollywood at a time when so many singers, songwriters, musicians, producers, record companies (labels) all swarmed to and worked in the business between this label & that label to create such great sounds! Enjoy this real nice unknown ballad “FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL” by Judy Brown, with it’s great string arrangement and male background vocals.
