From lowering costs to free delivery, the new specialty pharmacies at Lee Health are closing the gap between patients, physicians, and insurance companies. “We are integrated into the clinics and we see patients from the beginning when they have a medication prescribed to them. We help to make sure we can get the medications, get it affordable for the patient, get it to their house, and then monitor the medication clinically to make sure the medication is working and safe for them,” explained Dakota Freudenberg, a clinical pharmacist with Lee Health. Specialized medications can include medicine for pediatric and adult neurology, oncology, and rheumatology. “They are really high touch, expensive medications, that usually come with a lot of side effects, and insurances won’t approve and pay for them easily, so they may need more assistance,” she said. Clinical pharmacists work closely with patients to help them understand the medication and side effects. “We provide increased access to the patients. We call them weekly, monthly, as frequently as they need to make sure they don’t have any issues getting their medications,” said Freudenberg. Lee Health works with manufacturers around the country to get access to medications other pharmacies don’t have access to. “The benefits for our patients are really multifactorial. One, we can help get the medication at either low cost or zero dollars for them and we deliver straight to their house, we also monitor them alongside the physician,” she said.
