Prefight records; Arguello 67(54)-5, Mancini 20(15)-0. In Jun 1981, Arguello bagged the WBC Lightweight Title via UD15 over Jim Watt. With the win, he became the 7th Triple Crown World Champion in history having won world titles at Featherweight, Super Featherweight & Lightweight. For his 1st defense, he was up against young Mancini hailing from Youngstown, Ohio. Going into the fight, the challenger had a notable win over Jose Luis Ramirez while the seasoned champion had defeated top oppositions such as Bobby Chacon, Cornelius Boza Edwards, Jim Watt, Jose Legra, Jose Luis Ramirez, Leonel Hernandez, Rafael Limon, Rolando Navarrete, Ruben Castillo, Ruben Olivares & Alfredo Escalera (2x). It was an explosively intense fight from the opening bell, with Ray being the aggressor who initiated most of the exchanges with his renown high output and was more effective for the first 18 minutes while Alexis began to gain better control of the pace from round 7 on as he countered on his backfoot whilst using his pole like jab to keep the spirited challenger at bay. After 10 rounds, the fight was dead even as 1 judge had it for Ray, 1 had it for Alexis and 1 had it a tie. With about 5 seconds left in round 12, the Nicaraguan warrior connected with a pulverizing right hand that buckled the knees of the young Ohioan to turn the tides in his favor. Despite being visibly hurt, the No. 3 ranked contender displayed amazing courage and often retaliated to land his share of punches whilst taking tremendous punishment. Around the midpoint of round 14, Arguello scored a knockdown with a number of powerful left hooks followed by his patented right hand which prompted referee Tony Perez to step in and halt the bout. Ray Mancini was defeated for the 1st time in his career after 20 consecutive wins. "It was the best fight so far this year, my friend," Arguello said to Mancini after the victory. He then told the press, "I think my heart is special. But his heart is bigger than I have. … Someday this young man will be champion."
