In order to understand what prayer is, it is necessary to understand what God is, and in order to understand what God is, it is necessary to understand what you are. The practice of prayer depends upon our knowledge of ourself. If we believe we are a finite self, sharing the limits of the body and mind, we project the idea of God beyond ourself and the world. The traditional path of devotion to God attenuates and purifies the separate self, until there is the recognition that the being that you are is God's being.
