All Tequila is made from Mexico and comes from the fermentation and distillation of the blue agave plant. In order to be called tequila, at least 51% of the sugars fermented/distilled must come from the blue agave plant so if you want higher end product, make sure you buy product that states on the bottle "made from 100% blue agave". Agave is plant that takes between 6-8 years to produce. Lesser producers of tequila might choose to use the agave plant before it is mature, which would produce an inferior tequila. The heart of the agave plant or the Pina, is used to produce tequila. Each Pina can produce about a case of tequila. There are several levels of tequila. The one that most people are familiar with is Blanco or Silver tequila. This spend no time in oak and is the purest form of tequila and will have the most agave taste. Next is reposado tequila, which is aged in oak between 2-12 months. Then you have anejo tequila that is aged in oak barrels between 1-3 years and finally you have extra anejo tequila, which is aged in oak for over 3 years (in the video, I keep saying gran anejo but it should be extra anejo). Each bottle of authentic tequila has the words "NOM (4 digits) CRT" on the bottle. NOM stands for "Norma Oficial Mexicana" or the standards set by the governing board, the CRT (Tequila Regulatory Council). The 4 digit number is the distillery that produced the tequila. Patron was first produced by Casa 7 Leguas distillery over 50 years ago. The brand was purchased by John Paul DeJoria and Martin Crowley of St. Maarten Spirits in 1989. The changed the branding of Petron into a premium tequila brand in 2000 and started to individually number each bottle. Today Patron sells over 3 million bottles of tequila a year. In 2018, Bacardi bought Patron for $5.1 billion. Teremana Tequila is a new distillery where Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is one of the owners. As a start up, the expect to sell 300,000 cases in its first year. Adictivo is a distillery owned by Gildardo Partida, a 3rd generation tequila distiller. It was only established in 2016 and its extra anejo is aged in French oak barrels for 7 years.
