Deputy PM defends Grenfell demolition meeting & action on unsafe homes still years away (09/02/25)

In an interview with Laura Kuennsberg, Angela Rayner, who is also Secretary of State for Housing, says she tried to be sensitive to the Grenfell bereaved and survivors in delivering the decision about demolition of the Tower. But she offered no apology that there were people in the room who had not been consulted and would not say how many families were consulted. The Deputy Prime Minister went on to say that the majority of developers "and the freeholders" have agreed to take action on remediation of thousands of unsafe buildings "by the end of the parliament" and they will create new legislation to ensure it happens, "if [they] have to." As the interviewer points out, that's still five long years away. What she didn't say is that the deadline is only for high-rises, while the majority of mid-rise and low-rise buildings still have no end in sight. And there still remains no commitment on fixing internal life-critical fire safety defects.
