Ostomies come in many shapes and sizes, but can ultimately be described by just 2 variables: what type of bowel is used to create the ostomy (ileostomy vs colostomy), and the structure of said ostomy (end, loop, end/loop, etc). Once you know the terminology used to describe the structure and type of bowel, you should be able to understand exactly what type of ostomy your patient has, and be able to predict some typical advantages/disadvantages of the different types of ostomies.
