USS Yorktown (CV‑5) played a decisive role in the Battles of Coral Sea and Midway during World War 2. She was damaged during the Battle of Midway, and on June 7th, 1942, after heroic salvage efforts, was struck and sunk by a Japanese submarine. The wreck, located upright and remarkably preserved nearly three miles beneath the Pacific in 1998 by Robert Ballard's team, has since been revisited by scientific expeditions. In April 2025, as part of NOAA’s Papahānaumokuākea ROV & Mapping expedition, remotely operated vehicle dives penetrated archival areas—specifically the hangar deck and elevator shafts. These dives revealed an astonishing 42 × 12 ft hand‑painted mural depicting Yorktown’s global voyages, and a mysterious 1940–41 Ford Super Deluxe “Woody” station wagon—likely a ship’s car marked "SHIP SERVICE ___ NAVY", and at least three Douglas SBD Dauntless dive‑bombers - one still armed. Alongside these historic artifacts, the ROV documented deep‑sea flora and fauna—jellyfish, tubeworms, and anemones—highlighting the wreck’s role as an evolving habitat. This groundbreaking 2025 expedition not only shed unprecedented light on wartime artifacts and personal connections aboard Yorktown but also deepened our understanding of how such shipwrecks transform into vibrant ecosystems. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity, naval legacy, and the enduring mysteries held by the deep ocean.
