Woodland Love (Romance) 22:48 V. Maenads ------------------ Bax's Spring Fire Symphony is an early work of his. Drawing inspiration from Swinburne's poem Atalanta in Calydon. The symphony depicts the events of a day on a forest; from the sun rising to the dancing and singing of the mystical creatures in the final movement. Although it was one of Bax's early work, this symphony has an interesting history. Written in 1913, it was scheduled to be premiered the next year but was cancelled due to WW1. Another performance was announced in 1916, conducted by Thomas Beecham, but was too cancelled because of the difficulty of the work. A final attempt was made in 1919 to perform the work but it failed too. It was forgotten until a manuscript score was found in 1964 and was sent to Chappell & Co. - the night before the fire that burned the publishing house. The work was considered lost until a copyist's manuscript was found years later. ------------------ The videos I'm posting this month is a tribute to UnsungMasterworks: the biggest Raff fan I know.
