Join us for our next speaker series event: https://professional.brown.edu/execut... -- Mindfulness & Meditation-Specific Vocabulary Thank you all for watching! Below is a list of potentially unfamiliar words and terms used in the talk, along with their definitions: Dharma – A term from Buddhist philosophy in the Pali language that refers to the sort of law and order that determines reality. For instance, gravity is a law of life, and as such is an expression of dharma. Additionally, along with the teachings of the Buddha, and found in all religions, traditions, and philosophies, there are teachings that invite humans to live with wholesomeness, integrity, kindness, and cooperation. These too can refer to the dharma. Dhukha - A Pali word from Buddhist philosophy that speaks to unsatisfactoriness or suffering in life. Kabat-Zinn speaks of hospitals as “dukha magnets,” due to their focus on serving those who are sick. Orthogonal – A term from mathematics and philosophy meaning independent or unrelated in a given context; used metaphorically here to describe a different, hidden dimension of experience. Sangha (S) – A Buddhist term from the Pali language for a community of practitioners who support each other in their mindfulness journey.
