Eleanor Patterson discusses the problem of an elite athlete only being known for their sporting prowess. She acknowledges the importance of enjoying a life balance but said it can be difficult when an athlete such as herself has other creative outlets - sketching, knitting, or sewing – and other goals in life but is only known for her athletic achievements. After devoting so much of her energies to excelling in high jump – and Patterson was rewarded when she won the 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medal - she reached a point where athletics had become detrimental, and she stopped enjoying sport. This led Patterson on what she calls a journey of self-identity.
