#astrophotography What are the best camera settings for astrophotography? Let’s look. Top of the list is aperture. Opening up my aperture all the way is always my first step for shooting any type of astrophotography. We want to let in as much light as possible so using the smallest number (largest opening) aperture is my starting point. Next, I work with shutter speed and use the “400 rule” to decide what the longest shutter speed I can use is without having trailed stars. We take the number 400 divided by the focal length of our lens and the result is the longest shutter speed (in seconds) that we can use without getting trailed stars. I usually round this down to the nearest shutter-speed setting my camera has. Third is ISO. This one requires a bit of trial and error. I recommend starting with an ISO of 3200 and taking a test exposure. Then we can use the histogram to judge how our exposure looks. If the image is too bright, simply lower the ISO a bit; if it’s too dark, just increase it. You want the majority of the information to be about a fifth of the way across the histogram. Now let’s work with Long Exposure Noise Reduction. This will help reduce the noise in our final image by taking a “dark” frame after each image. This ties your camera up for 2x the shutter speed you have set, but it helps make a cleaner final image if you aren’t planning on stacking. For most people, I recommend turning this one on as the benefits outweigh the extra time it takes! Lastly, we have raw. Always shoot in raw. It gives you way more information to work with than JPEG and really allows you to do a lot more in the post-production side of things. In fact, I always recommend raw, not just for astro. Also, it’s raw, not RAW. It’s not an acronym, people. 😊 -------------------------- Looking to buy a tracker to improve your astrophotography?
