How do you plan for radioactive waste safety over hundreds of thousands of years? In this webinar, the Radiation Safety Institute of Canada welcomes Susanne Pudollek of Nagra, the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste in Switzerland, for an in-depth look at Switzerland’s approach to the long-term management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. Switzerland’s Nuclear Energy Act requires that radioactive waste be disposed of in a deep geological repository, where it is isolated within a stable rock formation several hundred metres below ground. After decades of scientific research and a federally led site selection process, the Nördlich Lägern region has been identified as the preferred location for this facility. Susanne Pudollek is Deputy Head of Repository Safety and Inventory at Nagra and leads the Inventory group. A physicist by training, she has worked in radiation protection and the nuclear energy sector since 2012. In her presentation, she explains how Switzerland’s disposal concept has evolved and what work still lies ahead as the program moves forward. This webinar is especially relevant for Canadian audiences, as Canada advances its own deep geological repository program. Switzerland’s experience offers valuable insight into how one national program has addressed technical, regulatory, and societal challenges associated with managing radioactive waste over very long timeframes. The scientific presentation is followed by a live question-and-answer session. As part of RSIC’s Radiation Safety and Wellness Webinar series, the recording also includes a short wellness segment led by Charlmane Wong of Ji Hong Tai Chi and Qi Gong Richmond Hill.
