Residents of Divundu and surrounding areas in the Kavango East Region will now be able to access mobile communication services after MTC opened a mobile home in the town. Before the introduction of the new mobile home, locals had to travel 200 kilometres to the nearest facility in Rundu. Andreas Gustav, MTC General Manager for Product Solutions, said, "Today, we are not just opening a new MTC store; we are opening doors to opportunity, technology enablement, and the digital growth and transformation that is permeating the country of Namibia." The Kavango East Governor, Hamunyera Hambyuka, says that despite the new mobile home, some communities in the region still lack access to full network connectivity. "There are still areas where mobile network coverage remains weak or inconsistent, particularly in our remote villages and settlements along the river and deep rural parts of the region. We therefore kindly appeal through your esteemed office for continued collaboration between the Ministry and MTC to improve network coverage so that every Namibian, no matter how remote their home, can have access to reliable connectivity. In this modern world, connectivity is not a luxury. It is a lifeline to education, health, and economic empowerment." Minister of Information and Communication Technology Emma Theofelus said network connectivity in Namibia has improved over the past five years, and services are being expanded across the country through initiatives like MTC's Project Buffalo, which upgrades existing infrastructure, and the introduction of 5G technology in August. "Project Buffalo aims to continuously enhance the systems on network towers, ensuring better quality, greater coverage, and upgrading towers from 3G to 4G or LTE technology, ultimately enabling 5G technology. Additionally, as the Ministry of ICT, we have issued a directive requiring all operators to provide a minimum download speed of 25 megabits per second across the country for all their clients." The minister said that although gaps remain, the government is committed to closing them. The Ministry of ICT has allocated N$40 million in this financial year to build network towers in areas where some network operators are unable to provide service.
